Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy can be a debilitating disease process. With the growing rate of diabetes and the growing rate of the use of chemotherapies to treat cancers, more and more people are developing the burning, tingling and excruciating pain in their feet and/or hands from peripheral neuropathy. In the past, when patients would come into one of our clinics, we really could not help them with their symptoms from peripheral neuropathy. The inability to feel their feet, or the burning pain that they experienced was untreatable through any type of natural treatments. It was typically “managed” through medications that ultimately make you dependent on them… which is not cost effective as you have to pay for them for the rest of your life… and really doesn’t help much from a standpoint of improving function. Walking, balancing and performing every day activities around the house really did not improve. They would typically be in this vicious cycle of the burning pain being so uncomfortable that they just wanted to sit in their recliner or their couch creating further weakness and further disability. This would lead to a decline in health, strength, endurance and could even contribute to helping out at the house.

But recently we have come across some research for a tool that can help improve the blood flow to the feet and improve the ability for those with peripherial neuropathy symptoms to feel their feet. This in turn will lead to a decrease in pain, burning and the overall sensation in the feet to assist in a natural healing approach. This natural healing approach will then lead to improving function and improving overall life.

Previously this treatment was difficult to get into the homes of patients because it was just not cost effective… Coming into the clinic 2-3 times a week was just not cost effective and for long term results it was not doable either. Now that the price has become more cost effective and more studies are coming out supporting this technology, we are getting fantastic success stories of people being able to feel their feet again, or having reduction in the pain in their feet. They have had much greater success in physical therapy and success with returning back and being a productive member to our communities.

So what is this technology and what do the clinical studies say? Well the technology is the Anodyne Therapy System. The clinical studies are suggesting that it improves foot pain and improves sensation. This led to improved balance and less frequent falls after treatment. These conclusions were based on 11 published studies that documented results in more than 4,000 patients using the Anodyne system.

These studies showed reductions in impairment in foot sensation in 97% of the patients in the study as well as an average sensory improvement of 65%. A reduction in foot and leg pain in 92% of the patients and pain reduction by 60%. Balance improvements were noted and 90% of patients reported reduced fall risk and actual balance scores improved by 85%. Ongoing use of the Anodyne system provided benefits measured after 12 months of use continued to show improved balance, reduction in falls, decreased pain and improved functional outcome scores for daily activities.
